Little Fins is our class for the youngest swimmers - aged three to five and completely new to water - in a smaller group of no more than five children to one coach. It is an introduction to the water built entirely around feeling safe and having fun: getting in and out, blowing bubbles, floating with support, and learning that water is a happy place. There is no rush toward strokes - confidence first, always.

From age five, six levels take a child from water confidence to a competent all-round swimmer, each building on the last. Lessons are 50 minutes, in classes of five to one coach up to Level 3, and eight to one from Level 4, with qualified and safeguarding-trained coaches. The focus, in this order, is safety, confidence, fun and skill.

Our programme is built on key progressions and aligned to Swim England’s National Plan for Teaching Swimming and British Swimming’s Long-Term Athlete Development model.

Learn To Swim Programme

6 Levels To Swimming Success

L1 - Water Confidence

Floating, submersion, safe entry and exit, push and glide, and the front-to-back rotation that lets a swimmer regain breathing

L2 - Freestyle

Coordinated front crawl with breathing to one side, from a streamlined push-off; treading water.

L3 - Backstroke

Backstroke as a stroke in its own right — flat body position, continuous kick, correct arm mechanics; sculling; the freestyle flip turn

L4 - Breaststroke

Whip kick and pull–breathe–kick–glide timing, plus a legal two-hand open turn. The most timing-sensitive stroke — often two terms

L5 - Butterfly

Body undulation, dolphin kick and the full stroke — the last of the four competitive strokes

L6 - Advanced

All four strokes refined, distance and stamina, and the Individual Medley. An open-ended competitive-readiness band to join academy swim squad

How Progress Works - With Our Bluefin APP

  • Coaches assess your child every lesson and record each skill as Taught, Developing or Mastered in our Glide tracker.

  • Your child moves up only when every skill in the level is mastered — progress is based on competence, not time served.

  • Most levels take one to two terms. Breaststroke and butterfly often take longer, and that is completely normal.

  • You can follow your child’s progress and awards in the Bluefin app.

Please be patient with progress. Every child learns at their own pace — staying at a level a little longer builds proper technique and lasting water safety. It is a sign of quality, not delay.

You can join any week

Because children join us throughout the year, the programme runs as a continuous five-week loop rather than a fixed block — one BLABT component each week. Whenever your child starts, they will see every skill within five weeks. There is no need to wait for a new term.

If you miss a session..

If we cancel for another reason. Sometimes we have to call off a session - a lightning storm at an open-air pool, for example. When the decision is ours, the make-up is yours to choose. We will always offer a replacement, and while we aim to fit it into the same month, we will be flexible if that does not work for your family. You should not lose a lesson because of a decision we made.

Bluefin is closed on national public holidays - this is a scheduled closure built into our calendar and already reflected in your monthly fee, so no make-up applies.

FAQ

  • Learn to Swim at Bluefin costs RM239 per month for one 50-minute group lesson per week, in classes of five to one coach up to Level 3, and eight to one from Level 4. Little Fins is five to one. New joiners pay a one-off RM90 registration fee which includes a Bluefin swim cap, towel, t-shirt & bag. We do not charge SST.

  • Most children take two to three five-week cycles to complete each of Bluefin’s six levels, so learning all four strokes from beginner typically takes two years. Breaststroke and butterfly usually take longer than the other levels. Children move up only when they have mastered every skill in a level, so progress is based on competence rather than time.

  • Children can begin water confidence lessons from age three, and structured stroke work from age five. Starting young builds comfort in the water before any fear develops, but there is no age at which it becomes too late - Bluefin teaches children up to sixteen, and adults as well.

  • No. Bluefin runs a continuous five-week teaching loop rather than fixed blocks, so a child can join in any week of the year and will still cover every skill within five weeks of starting.

  • If you tell Bluefin at least 24 hours before the lesson, your child can take a make-up in another available class within the same calendar month. Lessons cancelled with less than 24 hours' notice are forfeited. If Bluefin cancels a session for weather, you choose the replacement and we are flexible on when you take it. Bluefin is closed on national public holidays as a scheduled part of our calendar, so no make-up applies for those dates.

  • Your child needs well-fitting swimwear, goggles, a towel and warm layers, and a water bottle. A swim cap is recommended for longer hair, and swim nappies are required for children not yet toilet-trained.

  • Yes. Bluefin runs an adult Learn to Swim group at Tenby Setia EcoHill in Semenyih, one lesson per week, taught by the same coaches as our children’s programme.
